ACAP Names Breanna Cachere as Recipient of 2025 Sylvia B. Kelly Medical Scholarship
WASHINGTON— Breanna Chachere, MPH, a recent graduate of the Tillman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston, has been named the recipient of the Sylvia B. Kelly Medical Scholarship for Health Equity. The scholarship, administered by the National Medical Fellowships, recognizes medical students who demonstrate a sustained commitment to reducing the Black maternal mortality gap.
Dr. Chachere’s work in maternal health equity spans research, clinical training, and community organizing. As a Clinical Research Coordinator with UC San Diego’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, she contributed to the department’s Culture and Justice Quorum, helping design provider trainings and equity-focused data frameworks. She previously served as Project Manager for the Perinatal-Neonatal Quality Improvement Network of Massachusetts, coordinating statewide implementation of maternal safety bundles across nearly all birthing hospitals in the state.
In 2022, Chachere founded Project MatCHrescence through the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, a Houston-based program pairing prenatal education with postpartum “sister circles” for underserved Black mothers. She also serves on the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness in Family Medicine.
“Dr. Cachere is exactly the kind of physician our scholarship seeks to honor. She understands that closing the maternal health gap takes both better systems and better relationships between patients and physicians. She’ll be a leader in this space for decades to come, and we’re delighted to honor her with this award,” said ACAP CEO Margaret A. Murray.
A first-generation graduate student, Chachere holds a Master of Public Health from Boston University and a bachelor’s degree from Rice University. She is a Pisacano Leadership Program scholar and a recipient of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians’ Glen Johnson, M.D. Minority Award, among other national honors.
She is a first-year resident in family medicine in Wichita, Kansas, aiming to build community-rooted care models that support mothers and families across generations.
