STATEMENT OF ACAP CEO MARGARET A. MURRAY ON NORTH CAROLINA MEDICAID EXPANSION

WASHINGTON—Margaret A. Murray, CEO of the Association for Community Affiliated Plans (ACAP), issued the following statement in response to North Carolina’s decision to expand Medicaid to individuals earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level under the Affordable Care Act (ACA):

“Safety Net Health Plans applaud North Carolina lawmakers for taking meaningful steps to expand Medicaid to more than 600,0000 residents.

“Medicaid is an investment in our own. Forty states have recognized this and expanded Medicaid under the ACA. Many of their residents couldn’t afford health coverage or care otherwise.

“ACAP calls on the small minority of states that have not expanded Medicaid to follow North Carolina’s example and stand on the side of affordable, accessible coverage that improves health, reduces uncompensated care and decreases out-of-pocket costs for people living with low incomes.”
