Partnership for Medicaid Applauds CHIP Extension, Calls on Congress to Fund Safety Net Programs

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Partnership for Medicaid — a nonpartisan, nationwide coalition of health care providers, safety net health plans, counties and labor — applauds the passage of a long-term extension of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) included in the continuing resolution signed into law yesterday.

“We appreciate the bipartisan effort by Congress, particularly committee leadership, to provide stability for CHIP. The extension protects coverage for children and provides federal CHIP funding for six years. This long-term extension of CHIP funding will give families peace of mind and enable states to make investments that strengthen and improve their CHIP programs.”

“The Partnership strongly urges Congress to quickly turn its attention to address the four-month lapse in federal funding for a number of important safety net programs, including Community Health Centers, the National Health Service Corps, and Medicaid disproportionate share hospital payment funding. Lapsed funding and continued congressional inaction is threatening the health care infrastructure for our nation’s most vulnerable populations and jeopardizing access to needed services. It is imperative that Congress act swiftly to fund these vital programs.”
