Chief Medical Officer

Community Health Plan of Washington (CHPW), was founded in 1993 by local community health centers (CHCs), and is the only not-for-profit health plan in the state serving the Medicaid population. Since its inception, CHPW has been an innovator and leading advocate for expanding access to healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured in Washington State.

The plan serves 258,000 members with Medicaid as its largest program and also offers Medicare Advantage and Special Needs Plan products and participates in Fully Integrated Managed Care program, Washington State’s plan to fully integrate the financing and delivery of physical, mental and chemical dependency services. CHPW has over $1 billion in net premium revenue and is in a strong financial position. The organization is governed by a 23-member Board of Directors. Each of the member community health centers is represented by one member on the board, supplemented by three independent directors elected from the community at large.

The organization has 475 employees and performs many of the traditional HMO functions such as quality assessment and improvement, provider contracting and relations, premium negotiations, customer service, and regulatory compliance. In addition, the plan has the full range of supporting administrative functions such as finance, human resources, marketing and information technology.

The Board is seeking CMO candidates with at least five years of senior level medical management experience in a managed care plan or health system with responsibility for managing population health, preferably working with Medicaid and/or Medicare populations. She/he will be a strong, innovative leader who has the strategic and operational skills to enhance medical management and quality functions and position CHPW for value based payments and other changes in the market place. The CMO will have a strong commitment to improving access to health care services for the underserved populations in Washington State.
