STATEMENT OF ACAP CEO MARGARET A. MURRAY ON SENATE PASSAGE OF BUDGET RECONCILIATION BILL
WASHINGTON—Margaret A. Murray, CEO of the Association for Community Affiliated Plans (ACAP), issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted to approve a budget reconciliation package featuring significant cuts to Medicaid and Marketplace coverage and benefits:
“The bill will, by design, strip millions of working Americans and their families of the health care coverage and access they rely on.
“It includes the largest cut to Medicaid funding in our nation’s history. While framed as an effort to reduce waste and fraud, these changes will limit access to essential care for millions of Americans. Work requirements, often promoted as a solution, have been proven repeatedly to be ineffective at promoting employment and administratively burdensome. Most Medicaid enrollees who can work already do.
“Additionally, rolling back provider taxes, a key source of Medicaid funding for states, will strip billions in federal support. That will force cuts to coverage, provider payments, and essential services, putting hospitals at risk of closure and leaving people with fewer options for care.
“Changes to Marketplace coverage will also make it harder for consumers to stay enrolled by adding unnecessary, duplicative eligibility verification requirements and effectively eliminating automatic renewals. Making tax credits harder to obtain will, in the end, make coverage less affordable for everyone.
“We urge lawmakers in the House to oppose this bill in light of the harms it will impose on people and communities nationwide.”
