WASHINGTON— The Association for Community Affiliated Plans today honored Senator Sherrod Brown, the senior Senator from Ohio, with the organization’s 2015 Congressional Leadership Award. Senator Brown has served in the Senate since 2007 after serving seven terms in the House of Representatives from Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. He was recognized today for his career-long dedication to protecting and strengthening vital programs that serve as a lifeline to people with low incomes, including Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP.

Notably, Senator Brown recently introduced S. 428, the Stabilize Medicaid and CHIP Coverage Act, in the Senate. The bill will provide twelve-month continuous enrollment for people eligible for Medicaid and CHIP and will provide financial incentives to states to reduce churn across the Medicaid and CHIP programs. Earlier this year, he led efforts in the Senate to extend funding for the CHIP program. He also introduced legislation to extend a provision of the Affordable Care Act that brings reimbursement rates for primary care physicians participating in the Medicaid program on par with those who serve Medicare beneficiaries. He was also a supporter of the Affordable Care Act itself, which has brought health coverage to millions of previously-uninsured Americans.

“Senator Brown is notable for his vocal defense of key programs that serve people with low incomes. Sometimes he would do so when few others would,” said ACAP CEO Margaret A. Murray. “His commitment to assuring that Medicaid would be there to work – and work well – for our fellow
Americans when they need it is why we recognize him today.”

Previous winners of the ACAP Congressional Leadership Award include Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, Congressman Gene Green of Texas, Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa, Senator Max Baucus of Montana, and Representative Henry Waxman of California.
